Activities Prior to the Program
These activities are not part of the program which is covered by a registration fee; each optional activity has a separate charge.
Friday, April 23

Optional Activity I

9:00 a.m. Trip to Henry E. Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens.

Robert Wark, curator of art collections, will greet our guests and give an illustrated introduction to the drawings in the Huntington collection. If the size of the group allows, those wanting to do so will be given the opportunity to visit the drawings repository, in small numbers. 

Docents will be available to guide visitors through the Library and Botanical Gardens.

At noon, picnic lunch will be served in a nearby San Marino park, followed by a visit to the Norton Simon Museum of Art, in Pasadena. The permanent collection of this museum contains the Galka Scheyer Blue Four collection as well as notable examples of contemporary art. Also on view are works from the early Renaissance through the early twentieth century. In addition, Southeast Asian art and a selection of drawings will be on display. 

Optional Activity II

7:30 p.m. Visits to private collections, by reservation only. A number of the finest, most significant of Southern California's private art collections will be open to the program ticket holders by advance reservation. There is a charge of $5.00 per person for transportation for each trip. To facilitate advance scheduling of trips, indicate your preferences beside the descriptions of the collections on the reverse side of this announcement.

Saturday, April 24

Optional Activity III

3:00 p.m. Bus trip to four sites at the University of California at Los Angeles.

1) Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Gardens: Fifty-eight works of art by forty-three internationally known sculptors are displayed in a garden setting of several acres.

2) Elmer Belt Library of Vinciana: The library, a unique resource for the study of the science, art, and culture of the Renaissance, specializes in five centuries of Leonardo literature. Hosts will be Dr. Elmer Belt, donor of the library and professor, U.C.L.A. School of Medicine, and Professor Carlo Pedretti, of the Art History Department, School of Fine Arts, U.C.L.A., a leading scholar of Leonardo and editor of the forthcoming publication of the newly restored Codex Atlanticus of the Ambrosian Library in Milan. 

3) The Frederick S. Wight Art Gallery: The current exhibition will be Birds, Beasts, Blossoms, and Bugs: The Nature of Japan, curated by Dr. Harold P. Stern, Director of the Freer Gallery of Washington, D.C. The 175 multimedia subjects date from the twelfth to the nineteenth century. Gallery Guides will welcome our guests and conduct tours of the exhibition. 

4) The Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts: The holdings of the Grunwald Center include works from the fifteenth century to the present, with special representation in the fields of ornament prints, German Expressionism, and prints by Picasso, Matisse, and Rouault. The Center will be opened in response to advance requests of a specific nature. Write to Mr. Thomas Travis, at the Grunwald Center, U.C.L.A., Los Angeles, Ca. 90024, to make your requests known. 

Optional Activity IV

8:00 p.m. Visits to private collections, by reservation only. (All excursions will leave from, and return to, the Ogden Street parking lot area of the Museum. Parking is available at 6th and Curson in the lot located in the northeast area of Hancock Park.)
