GERICAULT, Theodore (Rouen 1791 - Paris 1824)

"THE BATTLE FIELD"
(Battle of Maipu) (?)

Watercolor: 12 3/8 x 20 3/8

Date: Circa 1818 -1819

Dying and wounded men and wounded horse lie in the left foreground. At right prisoners sit or stand in dejected attitudes around a broken down wagon. Upper left a group of lightly sketched military figures stand on a high cliff looking out over the valley and streams, to the blue hills in the background. Descending the cliffs a mounted Officer, probably a General, followed by his Staff, ride their horses swiftly to the plateau in the foreground.

Collection: Percy Moore Turner - London

Exhibited: Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, 1932, No. 87.
George Charpentier Gallerie, Paris "Gericault", 193 (?)
Maison Francaise, Oxford, 1950, No. 5

These indications of exhibitions were given by the executor of the P. M. Turner estate, but checking on the two latter ones, so far, has given no results.

Complementary note:

G. Clement in his book on "Gericault" refers to a drawing "The Battle of Maipu" which was a composition for the lithograph of the same name. (p. 336; No. 45)
