Dear Sir, 

The Gov't of the United States has been kind enough to send me to make a report on the Agricultural condition of the State of South Carolina.  To get such information as I wish, I must rely much upon the aid of gentlemen of reliability & intelligence - who have resided here - to give my by letter in full their views upon the following points.  I learn that you are among the class from whom I can get the information I desire.  The following are the points especially to which your attention is called, viz:
