The whole affair took place in front of my office, and most of it in my hearing. I called the parties in, after demanding of Lockhart that he desist, and after a hearing in the matter, I fined Lockhart five dollars, and upon his promise to report and pay the fine next morning I released him. He failed to report, and the second day after I sent for him, when the man I sent was met with all manner of abuse, and utter defiance. I then sent a force to arrest him, but he had been sent away. Several times I sent for him, but in each instance he was got out of the way. In the meantime the father of the young man made all manner of threats, defying anything like Yankee authority. I, however, succeeded last Thursday in arresting the young man. Soon after the mother and sister of the young man called at my office, & it is useless for me to attempt to notate the abuse she heaped upon myself and the Government. I made no reply, however,
