These men who thus complain formerly belonged to men in this county by the names of Spriggs Larman Gass Rutherford &c &c &c

These freed men requested me to inform the Government of their condition. I will take it upon me to say they are all truly loyal and will fight for the United States Government till they die, if required, but I cannot say this of their former masters.

I am informed that Larman, mentioned above, holds his black people to the present hour as slaves and threatens to shoot any one of them who will attempt to leave him. This did not come under my own knowledge but it is reported to me in such a way as to make me believe it.
