St. Catherines, may 4th/66

Dear General

Since my return here I find the Smallpox has been on the increase and is now seriously troubling us in our planting. There are now Sixty on the sick list which is a large number to take from 146 full hands especially as the sick are mostly field hands. Should any more deaths occur I fear the moral effect on the people will be very bad as they are very easily frightened.

I merely write the above to inform you of the condition today, as my last might lead you to suppose that the worst was passed[?] as I supposed at time of writing, the number of sick then being but 37 a gain on the largest number previously on the list of nine.

We all hope most sincerely that the Doctor will return as soon as possible as his presence has an excellent effect.

Truly Yours
Geo. W. Schuyler
