the first opportunity that offered when he was at once attached to the Secret Service by Genl Sherman and was employed as a scout and guide for our army and in mapping out the country from Atlanta to Macon for the use of our forces. Owing to this fact the Seccessionists & the Rebel Elements of the city of Griffin have expressed their determination for a long while to Mr Swayze to drive him from the country his life has been frequently threatened & the citizens voluntarily informed me there was no use of his trying to obtain redress from the civil authorities "as he was so damn mean, he could not get a Judge of Jury to give a Judgement in his favor.

The U.S. Officers at Griffin & many of the loyal citizens called upon me & informed me that they considered the life of Mr Swayze was daily in danger, and requested that troops might be sent there to protect him and them in their daily avocations & pursuits. Among other things they stated to me that a certain citizen had made the assertion that 100 men stood ready to take Mr Swayzes life as soon as he was removed from Govt protection. The following are the names of some of these gentlemen.

I met a committee of the citizens who are prejudiced against Mr Swayze, & heard their complaints  they made a great many wild charges, but brought no proof to substantiate any of them  I directed them however to reduce their charges
