and testimony to writing and forward them to these Head Qts & I assured them they would be investigated. At the same time they promised me that they would use every effort to put down the lawless & mob like spirit exhibited so often of late, and that no rash measures should be used towards Mr Swayze, the Negroes, or any other person, & upon their making these promises I agreed not to recommend or apply for any troops to be stationed at that place. I intended leaving that evening but the train "being behind time" I witnessed some of their lawless acts. A Negro man was arrested by two policeman for some crime he had committed some time since & they were taking him to the jail or guard house when some of the crowd shouted let us hand "the damned nigger" as they remarked the jail was full & they did not want to feed the lazy whelps any longer. The Marshal however succeeded in taking off the negro & confined him. A few moments afterwards I saw a man shoot at a negro who was lying down on the R Road platform asleep  the negro was frightened & ran  the whole crowd laughing at the performance and upon my making enquiry why he was shot at - I received the reply "just for fun & to see how near he could come to him & to see the nigger run". Among the crowd, I saw some of the same persons who had promised me in the afternoon they would do all in their power to put down such lawless acts, and they were now encouraging the parties engaged & seemed very much pleased with their proceedings - I became satisfied [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] that the civil authorities would do nothing
