--To play w. rubâb is difficult, because styles are so diverse!

* Rubâb is national instrument of Afghanistan.  Made of mulberry tree branches.  3 pieces of wood: body, neck & chest. 3 mainstrings; 15 ---strings.

--Traditionally instruments are played sitting down.

--Performer #1(Saleh)began playing at age 10.  Considered to be "old people's" music. Decided to try to play rubâb for younger people!

--California has had an influence on their music. (They play a song called "Hotel California.") But they are hanging on to their roots! They want to give Afghan music to CA! The sound of the rubâb is healing!

--Enjoyed playing w. Basque singer in last night's concert, but couldn't understand what she was saying.

--Questions:

(1) In collaboration w. Kronos Quartet, did you introduce new instruments to them?
--Yes.  Homayoun (rubâb player) actually composed for them.

(2) Can you talk about things you have in common with other (non-Anglo) groups in CA?
--Many musical connections, including materials for instruments (goatskins, e.g.)
--Also, a common love of soccer!
--Also, love of  ceviche.

(3)  Can you comment on young people of Afghan descent in CA?
--Yes, they are getting involved in making Afghan music.  Both are totally committed to preserving and transmitting Afghan musical traditions.

(4) How to live in modern times and not disconnect with the past?--Cooking, music, faith all tie them to their roots.
