- dragon boat races are held to honor Qu Yuan- a minister from Chu. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the river. The people were so distressed, they sailed their boats up & down the river searching for Qu Yuan's body. They also threw food into the river. Today, people follow these traditions by racing their boats (dragon boat races and throwing zonzgi [[zongzi]] (rice treats) into the river.

-different areas of China have slightly different celebrations, for example, in the south, the zonzgi [[zongzi]] may include egg yolks or be wrapped in something other than bamboo.  In the north, the same food usually includes bean paste.
