IMPORTANT NOTICES.

Invoices.——The Custom House does not return invoices which have been entered for duty. It is therefore advisable to keep a copy of the invoice, if you wish to refer to it after receiving the goods.

Personal Effects.——Under the law of October 1, 1890, the Customs hold Personal Effects dutiable when they do not arrive with the passenger for his comfort and convenience en route; however, if you will execute the enclosed oath before a ______ at the same time stating in the oath, your reasons why the articles were not brought with you when you came to this country, and return same to us, we will make application for free entry.

Household Effects.——If the goods are old and show evidence of use and have been in your possession over one year abroad, they are admitted free of duty upon the Household oath.

Inheritances, Presents, Etc., sent from abroad, even if they are old and are household effects, are liable to duty.

Instruments, Implements, Professional Books and Theatrical Wardrobes of arriving actors, when in actual use, are free of duty as "tools of trade."

Articles; such as books, maps and charts (not more than two copies in any one invoice), philosophical and scientific instruments and preparations, paintings, drawings, and etchings, regalia and gems, statues, statuary and specimens of sculpture, when imported by colleges and schools, literary, religious or philosophical societies, are free of duty upon the production of the proper affidavit. Also books printed exclusively in any other than the English language.

Works of American Artists, produced abroad, can be entered free of duty, but the certificate of an American Consul is required.

Manufactures of the United States exported and returned in the same condition, are free of duty when accompanied by a foreign customs certificate to that effect, verified by a United States Consul, together with evidence of foreign clearance.
