| October 8th 1869 #251 | Alabama Edwin Beecher Supt of Education Oct 9th Returned approved on condition that the land is properly deeded to Trustees for school purposes forever | Montgomery Ala Oct 4th 1869. Encloses letter of some of the leading citizens of Opelika Ala. Stating that there are 330 colored children in and near that place without school facilities and petitioning for aid to build a school house which will cost $1000 they furnishing $600. States that he has lately been to Opelika and believes it desirable to establish a good school there. That a suitable building would cost $1500. Recommends that the application be approved with permission to extend the amount to $1000 instead of $600.

| Oct 11th #253 | Alabama Edwin Beecher Supt of Education Oct 14th returned to Col Beecher EB p 539. Vol 5 | Montgomery Ala Oct 6th 1869 States that he was authorized Augt 30th 1869 to expend $700 in erecting a school house at Prattsville  Finds that the colored people at that place have had a lot given them, and a house on another lot which can be removed to the lot given. The upper story of the building has been fitted up for a church at the expense of the colored people, and they request that when the building is moved they may not be forbidden the use of their church. If their request is granted it will subserve both education and religion as the building is better fitted up than could be done for twice the appropriation |

Swaim to withdraw his his letter of the 1st inst. requesting the revocation of the order assigning him to the 10th Cavalry, & to be allowed until the 25th to renew his application, has been formally considered by the General of the Army. |
