Porter, Agent of the Bureau, denied having his cleck for bounty &c and ordered him out of his offices, and states that Porter has been drunk, and absent those days from his office.  |

In reply to comn of 10th inst fron Maj E L Deane relative to Marine Hosptl, (copy enclosed) which was submitted to the Treasy Dept, he has been instructed to request the Dist Atty to prepare the deed as desired by Genl Howard and in conformity with the laws of So Ca and forward the same to the Treasy Dept, where it will be executed by the Secty and delivered to Genl Howard on day not of the date due $8000  |

In reply to commn of 6th inst states that Mary Ann Bells presence will be necessary to support her suit and that she ought to be thee by the 11th, He will see that her case is properly handled so that she may recover her children  |


|  Oct 4th  #86  |  Croxton Jno. F.  |  Paris Ky  Octr 1st 1869  States that his clients, the people of Macon are anxious to settle th controversy in regard to the Armory.  They are willing to give something to have the matter settled.  Thinks that the Govt can hold no real estate by a title based on a law primitive [[?]] of treason or rebellion.  The people will not give the price set on the property $10,000.  Would be glad to settle the matter if terms are offered.  Requests an answer.  Oct 5th Referred to Col Lewis Supt of Ed for Ga  The writer has been informed of this referral.  Rec' back and returned Oct 20 EB p 368 vol 5  |

Acknowledges the receipt of the letter of the 1st inst from Bu R.F. and A.L. relative to the conveyance of the Marine Hospital at Charleston to Messrs Porter, Tunholm and Bennett as Trustees &c  "Has looked over the Act of Congress of April 20th 1866 under which the Secty of the Treasury makes this sale, and finds that he is authorized to lease or sell at public auction."  Thinks that a trust would be inoperative.  Advises that a deed in fee simple be made to a third pary and a deed in trust by that person to the parties above named would be the proper method of conveyance.  See L.B. vol 5 Oct 9 1869.
