The inspector whom I sent to examine into the condition of the destitute people of the state of Georgia report that at least 200,000 rations for month will be required to supply their wants until the new corn crop can be made available for use. I fear that this estimate will rather fall under the final amount required. Capt Pickett has been assigned to the special duty of superintending the issue of rations to the destitute people of this state. He will make frequent inspections reporting directly to this office. Every possible effort will be made to prevent suffering and at the same time prevent an abuse of the liberality of the Government. Agents, carefully selected have been employed in the Counties to issue the rations. I enclose you a copy of their instructions and also copies of blanks used in issuing rations.
