Sir

Information has been received at this office that on or about the 7th inst a certain party entered the private residence of a Gentleman in Madison who was teaching colored scholars in his own house, and with a drawn knife curses this teacher and his wife, knocked down several of the scholars and made use of the most abusive and insulting language, all of which was approved and applauded by several of the citizens of Madison - That the teacher sent for the City Marshal in order to have this man arrested - that the Marshall did not make his appearance until two hours or more after the occurrence had taken place - that when informed where this man could be found he made no attempt whatever to secure his arrest but permitted him to leave Madison on the next train. - The Ass't Com'r directs that you make an immediate and thorough investigation and report of this
