Sir
Your Communication of August 27th asking for further instructions in the case of Joel Cook, has been laid before the Asst Commissioner who directs me to say that as this case occurred subsequent to the act of the Legislature of Ga admitting freedpeople to testify in court he prefers that it should be brought before the Civil Authorities for trial. If they fail to render a judgment against Mr Cook you will report such fact to this Office when further instructions will be given you in the matter. In the meantime the Ass't Commissioner directs you to hold the bale of Cotton belonging to said Cook until a final disposition is made of this Case.

Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
