Sir.
John Wesley (Freedmen) states that he commenced working for Mr Anderson Johnson of Deering, Columbia County on or about the 1st of January 1866. That Mr Johnson refused to make a contract, but agreed to pay him $60, in money at the end of the year, and to give him during the year, three suits of clothes and two pairs of shoes. That on or about the 15th of June he left his work in the cotton field at Sundown to get wood for the house, whereupon Mr. Johnson told him that if he must quit work at that time of day to gather wood, he must quit working for him. And that if he did quit him, he wouldn't pay him for the time he had worked for him. That he then left the place. The Asst Commr directs that you cause the man to be paid for the time he worked for Mr Johnson. in compliance
