James B. Townsend, Esq.,

Art Director, South Carolina Inter-state Exposition,
#36 Park Row, New York City.

Dear Sir:--

As requested in your favor of the 15th instant, I have signed, and returned herewith order on Mr. Soffin, Director of Fine Arts, Pan-American Exposition, to deliver to you the painting by Mr. F. S. Church, entitled "Knowledge is Power".

I regret you find it impossible to borrow a good example of Mr. Whistler's work, but I must confess to little, if any, surprise. There are but very few of his paintings in this country, and they are in constant demand for the numerous exhibitions of various kinds so frequently occurring in this big country of ours. I have had over a dozen recent calls for the work of Mr. Whistler now at Buffalo.

Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
