{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:22:44]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
images by a photographer by the name of Plaeton, or Platon?

[00:22:44]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:22:48]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
of the cover for Time magazine, they did special issues of the Democrats

[00:22:52]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mmm, Mhmm.

[00:22:52]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
and the Republicans, and the images were very similar,

[00:22:55]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:22:55]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
except the background was dark. And, so, president-elect Obama came off looking very much like,

[00:23:05]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
for lack of a better way of putting it, Amun-Ra in some of the Egyptian iconography that you see,

[00:23:05]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Huh.

[00:23:10]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
because it was long and narrow and dark and he had a very kind of gentle fade to his features,

[00:23:10]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Uhuh. Uhuh.

[00:23:16]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
whereas Senator McCain came off as a little bit more strident. He was a little bit more brightly lit,

[00:23:22]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Interesting.

[00:23:22]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
his skin is a little bit-- in this photograph it's a little bit sun-tanned, but in the one on Time magazine, it was a little bit pinky-blue.

[00:23:31]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:23:31]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
So a little paler.

[00:23:33]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
And that in itself made an editorial comment.

[00:23:36]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Very interesting.

[00:23:36]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
But the the reason, to answer this lady's question over here about Mr. Obama's ears, the reason they're out of focus is because this is shot on film.

[00:23:44]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
This is not a digital photograph. And so, the photographer's main aim was the eyes and the mouth, because they are the most expressive parts of the human face.

[00:23:44]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:23:57]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
And so, he's he's trying to get the eyes and the mouth crystal clear focus, and everything else kind of fades out

[00:24:05]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 1"}
because he says that's more revealing. That's more, um, show's more person inside, rather than someone who's posing for a photograph.

[00:24:13]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Thank you so much. That's a wonderful observation. I really appreciate it.

[00:24:19]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
I'd like to invite your comments on the size of the photograph,

[00:24:19]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Uhuh, uhuh.

[00:24:24]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
I mean I'm just comparing, frankly, your head to his as we're talking, [[laughing]] and I guess you could probably get about 10 or 12 of yours in there.

[00:24:30]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
[[Anne Goodyear laughing]] You know, about 10 times a normal human size. But-- and and that's really, obviously that's a big part of the power, right? It obviously invites us in and we can also see more detail,

[00:24:30]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm

[00:24:38]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
but it's more than that, and I'm mean maybe the way to frame the question is,

[00:24:42]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
if this if this were on the side of a building, and 400 times the size,

[00:24:42]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Uhuh

[00:24:46]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
that wouldn't even bother us, right? That might-- it would remind me a little bit of cults and personality,

[00:24:46]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Mhmm.

[00:24:51]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
and you know, pictures of Stalin that are 4000 feet high.

[00:24:51]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Right. Right. Right.

[00:24:54]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
There's something that's too big,

[00:24:55]
{SPEAKER name="Anne Goodyear"}
Uhuh.

[00:24:55]
{SPEAKER name="Audience 2"}
and then there would obviously be something
