My dear Freer
I thank you for yours of Aug. 15 which I had answered in advance, also acknowledge your kind favor received yesterday enclosing cheque twenty seven hundred and fifty dollars in payment for the picture "New England Hills" by D W Tryon. I have read with care the clipping you send and conclude that it is a hopeless case. It is sad that a writer of this low grade should have been in a position to hinder the carrying out of something so splendid as the profound memorial of the founding of Detroit.
As to going short of Tryon's cannot think of it, will have to be bunched with "the half-educated American connoisseurs of the present decade"

Sincerely yours
N E Montross
