| May 7, 1868. Don. S. P. Citizen 1. | Crawfordville. Miss. May 7. 1868.  States that he & Col. Don rented a plantation, on which they found an invalid freedwoman, who had no relations to take care of her, & that they had applied to the Board of Police which ordered her sent to Lauderdale for admission into Hospital. |

| Endorsement 1. | Office Howard Asylum Lauderdale, May 8, 1868.  Respectfully referred to the Asst. Comr for the State of Miss. with the request that I be instructed as to what action should be taken in such cases.
The within described person was temporarily admitted to the Hospital. She was sent to the Depot at Lauderdale, & there left, & being entirely destitute, she was admitted (without an order from the Asst. Comr) as an act of charity.

Respectfully referred to Bvt. Maj. W. H. Bartholomew U.S.A. Sub. Asst. Comr Columbus. Miss. who is directed to proceed to Macon, Noxubee County, & compel the Board of Police of the county to return the freedwoman within mentioned to that county at their own expense, & care for her in the same manner as white paupers are cared for. The Board will be informed that such an assumption of authority, as ordering this pauper to Lauderdale cannot be tolerated & that a repetition will call for more stringent proceedings.
These papers to be returned with report.
