Gentlemen:——

Referring to your good letter of the 23rd instant, I beg to say that the Japanese manuscript arrived at my resident safely on the day before Thanksgiving, and I have had an opportunity to examine it most carefully. It impresses me as being a very valuable specimen of Japanese art work, and if the subject were not the one it is, I should be more deeply interested in it. My collection already contains representations of the same subject, (the thirty-six poets) by several masters of the various schools of Japanese art, and I do not desire to add any further examples of the same subject.

I am greatly obliged to your for having sent the album for my examination and study, and shall return it to you to—day by American Express, charges prepaid.

Yours very truly,
Charles L. Freer
