Sir, I am directed by the Asst Commissioner to request that a Detacht. of troops consisting of one reliable Non-Commissioned Officer and ten (10) men Cavalry if possible be sent to Cotton gin, Freestone Co. Texas, to report to 2nd Lieut A.F. Manning V.R.C., Sub Asst Com for this Bureau at that place. I am Sir Very Respectfully Your Obt Sert. (Sgd) J.T. Kirkman 1st. Lt. 26th U.S. Inf. and A.A.A. San Antonio, Texas. 903 Vols/492 Major, I am directed by the Ass't Com'r to inform you that a S.O. 56, C.S. Dist of Texas, relieving you from duty with your Comm'd, entitles you to commutation of quarters &c. and enables you to give your whole attention to the affairs of the Bureau and he hopes you will make yourself thoroughly familiar with your Districts' people and their wants &c. Request the Comd'g Officer of the Post to detail for you such enlisted men as you may require as clerks and orderlies &c., and if he cannot furnish them, then send the names of such men as you may need to this office with the duty you may wish them to perform. Com'r &c Leon Co.Texas 877 Vols/1338 Sir, I am directed by the Ass't Com'r to instruct you to proceed to Crockett, Houston Co for the purpose of assisting Mr. Jacobs Sub. Ass't. Com'r to establish himself at that place and giving him such instructions and advise as fro your better knowledge of the country and people may be of service to him in the commencement of his duties. Make your arrangements with Capt. Bradford to occupy your office in your absence and call upon him for such troops, as you may find necessary to enable you to carry out the above instructions. Your absence from your office will depend entirely upon the length of time, you may find it necessary to remain at Crockett. I am also directed by the Ass't Com'r to call your attention to the fact that no report has been received from you of the action you have taken in regard to the arrest &c. of the Murderers of the Freedmen on Cessna Plantation, or of the result of such action.
