Sherman, Texas 0/ Sir, I am directed by the Asst Com to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of June 5th & to state that it is thought you can take the oath as you sought office not to aid but resist the rebellion. Judge Paterson of Tennessee was similarly situated & took the oath for admission to the U.S. Senate. [[strikethrough]] 131 [[/strikethrough]] 134/141 General I have the honor to state that 2nd Lieut Alfred F. Manning V.R.C., now on duty in the Bu. in this state, lost one of his legs in the U.S. Service during the war; also that on the 30th ult. while in the discharge of his duty he was waylaid one mile from Cotton Gin, Freestone Co. and shot once in his remaining leg, causing a severe flesh wound. Lieut Manning has, for some time, been much inconvenienced from a defect in his artificial limb, which cannot be well repaired in this section. I would respectfully request that he be ordered to duty in some Northern State, where the climate will be more conducive to health, and that he may have his artificial limb repaired.
