In a report made by Capt S A Craig while he was Sub Asst Comsr at Brenham bearing date Sept 16, 1866, he says: 
"There have been five soldiers shot in this (Washington) County since the close of the war".

The Asst Commissioner directs that you endeavor to ascertain the names of the persons who killed these men and the circumstances connected therewith and forward the same to this Headquarters  Also state if the men who killed the soldiers were black or white
