Sir,

Enclosed you find an order assigning you to duty as Sub asst Comsr. for the 40" Sub District; also a letter to Samuel Jones County Clerk directing him to transfer to you the records pertaining to your office.

Application has been made to General Howard for your appointment as an Agent of the Bureau at a salary of One hundred dollars per month, to take effect June 1st, 1868.

It will be necessary for you to subscribe and swear to the inclosed Oath of office before some competent authority to administer such and return the same to this office.

Full information concerning your duties can be obtained from the laws of Congress. Circulars and Orders which you will find in the Office. For specific instructions apply to the Officer in charge of the office from which you desire your information.

Sir,

In the case of Stanford Andrew f.m. I am directed by General Reynolds to say that this case should have been settled a year ago, no benefit can result to the freedmen in reopening it now with Hendley & Co. The case also illustrates the inexpediency of Freedmen trusting their Cotton to Agents at all, they had better be advised to sell for cash to the nearest purchaser.

With their inexperience and ignorance of the custom of trade they will generally suffer from any other course.
