Sir,
Referring to your letter of the 27 ult. regarding the money belonging to certain freedpeople on the plantation of R.H. Chim which was in the possession of Mr. Garretson, late Sub Asst Com at Matagorda, I would state that I have received from Lieut Garretson $238.40/100 currency, the equivalent of $162 in specie, and if you will send the name of each freedman with the amount due, checks will be sent them in your care for the amount.

I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your Telegram of this date and in reply am directed by General Reynolds to say that in case it is absolutely necessary for the discharge of the duties of your office a clerk can be hired for a few days, but it is preferable to delay your reports than to hire one. 

Your attention is called to the frequent use of the Telegraph. No communication should be sent in that manner unless something of great importance and requiring immediate attention.
