Taylor to John Campbell Esq: dated Oct. 28, 1868, is unauthorized and disapproved. The decision of the Court will be carried out.

The receipt of the Sheriff of Washington Co. to Mr. Campbell is herewith returned.

Sir:
In reply to your communication of the 6th inst. inclosing the petition of Mr. Jas. L. Davis, for protection against E.L. Davis, and Frank Baker. I am directed by the Asst Com'r to say that at present his (Mr. Davis') only recourse is through the civil courts. It is impossible to render Military assistance in a case of this kind owing to the small amount of troops in this State. 

It is the duty of the civil officers to execute the law. Should any refuse to take action suitable persons can be recommended to fill their places. The warrants of arrest are herewith returned.
