Sir:
In a communication from this office dated October 21, 1868, you were told that the bill for funeral expenses of Wm. G. Kirkman, was returned to Maj. Shorkley for his signature to the certificate of accounts for the same that the amount might be paid by the Bureau.

The accounts were forwarded to Washington for authority to pay the same and have been returned disallowed.

Sir:
In reply to your telegram of the 2nd inst., I would state that assurance cannot be given that you can hold the position of Asst. Superintendent of Education at Nacogdoches, Texas for one year, although you probably can.

Col. Hunt is willing that you accept the place if you so desire. Your services would not be needed until your appointment can be received from Washington. In the mean time you can remain in your present position.
