On the 23rd inst I recv from Revd E M. Wheelock instructions to notify the teacher of the Freedmans School at this place, that her services would not be required after the 31st inst, as Mr. Wheelock was on the staff of Genl Kiddoo I recognize these directions as official and acted accordingly; last evening however Lieut Eckles of the 35th U.S. Infty called at my office and stated that he has just arrived from Galveston, and that General Griffin has instructed him to direct [[strikethrough]] him [[/strikethrough]] me to suspend the order I have receivd regarding the School teacher here; I cannot of course doubt that Lieut Eckles recvd such instructions from Genl Griffin, but as Lieut Eckles informed me that he is not on staff of the Genl, I surely think I should be justified in taking official action upon the message delivered to me by Lt Eckles as at present I have no ground for construing that message as an official one.
