Made complaint in case cited to appear on the 31- of Dec, last and make settlement. I kept all the books time table &c and went fully prepared to make, an honest statement of then amount due the freedmen and did so in the presence of them. and with which statement they were satisfied. Smith asked me the day previous if I had kept a full account of the last time I told him I had, and had taken it out of their quarterly pay and he had no benefit of it. he replied he never had kept any amount. on the next day he made out and presented an amount of lost time more than the amount due the freedmen. I informed Smith, and the Capt. that the amount was false, but the Capt. thought if Smith made oaths to the amount & he was under obligation to allow it. I could have convinced him in one minute that it was impossible that the amount could be true but felt a delicacy to offer instructions to a man in the discharge of an official duty and remarked that when Smith swore to the amount I wanted him to hand the papers to me which he did (over)
