I am confident you will take a liberal view of this matter. You are aware that a freedman under the Civil Rights Bill and under the laws of our state has every right to sue in our state or the Federal courts that a white citizen has- then in an action of debt is the freedman [[legislated?]] for partially and to the white man's prejudice? I request you officially and as a lawyer to give me your views upon this matter, and to say if Col De Gress will be permitted to seize and sell the property of any citizen of this state without due process of civil law. All the courts are open to whites and freedmen alike. Please do me the favor to answer and, in any event, I am Yrs with esteem-
