me a small sum ad interim that there was no provision made to remunerate me by the government till regularly commissioned under these assurances I have acted up to this time. I did not make the Exactions from the freed people but simply stated the facts to them that it was optional with them whether to Respond or not as they saw propper under these circumstances I have received from the planters 59 dollars & from the freedmen 2325 only as compensation, this constitutes the Entire sum to term of my Remuneration up to date for over 3 months of Real hard Labour & of the most arduous Character during which time I have supervised personally & on the ground the settlements of the Entire county with but one or two Exceptions & those a day or two will lose--through out the entire county my settlements have given full satisfaction to all parties as far as practicable with but one single Exception & on that plantation I spent over 2 weeks & do know positively that the parties were predetermined to dissatisfaction. I have just Received a circular from your head quarters Addressed to me in the official capacity of Sub Assistant
