I will take this occasion to say that the Civil authorities of this county are disposed to assist me as much as possible to protect the freedmen, the Magistrate of this county or beat is an "unconditional union man" and since I have been here has has assisted me a great deal, but as for the Judge of the District, I have no confidence in him in the least. he is an open and avowed secessionist at this time

Otherwise than the above everything is progressing as [[firm? fair?]] as I could wish. The freedmen are doing and have done extraordinary well. They have made this year a larger crop than ever was made before in this county, and it will take till after Christmas to gather it. Although the [[strikethrough]] freedmen [[/strikethrough]] Planters have brought from other Counties a large number of freedmen to gather it, and are also paying the enormous price of $100 [[species?]] a hundred for pickers.

So far I have been able to obtain a fair division of the crop, much better than I anticipated, but still I am fully aware that the freedmen will be cheated a great deal, which I cannot remedy for the reason the freedmen will not know it themselves and consequently will not report it to me. These person who will endeavor to take advantage of the freedmen are men
