The State of Texas and This day personally appeased bounty of Liberty and before the undersigned authority Sarah book freedwoman who be duly sworn says that? Wharton Branch wrote the letter signed by her mark dated Liberty January 19th 1867 addressed to "Genl. Kiddoo B.R.F.& A.L." That affiant says that she did not know that said letter contained any statement in relation to the beating of a colored man by Maj. Fontaine and his Brothers, Affiant further says that she knows nothing of Maj. Mayer having refused to release her son (Saphire,) given his contract with Maj. Fontaine on account of his size, Affiant further says that she had heard that her son had made no contract with Maj. Fontaine for the year 1867. Affiant does not not know wheather he had made such a contract or not.
