so we walked down 5" Avenue home. It has been very warm today and tonight is like a summer night. I wrote to my father today and also to Mr. Meeks telling him he is to have the picture.

Monday May 26" 1873. I wrote to Dr. Coch today telling him I had my picture (Kaatskill Woods) which he wanted to buy last spring for $1000 telling him if was still interested in it I would try to make the price satisfactory to him. I hate to do even a legitimate price of business like this but I do not feel [[?]]ed in leaving any honorable means untried to sell my picture. Mr. Weeks called and paid me $400 for my picture "A soft grey autumn day" (14 x 26) and I sent it home to him by Ressel. Mary & Vanx called in the evening and Vanx told me of a Mr. Culver Engineer in chief of the Brooklyn Park who wanted to get a little picture of mine and advised me to send a note to him, which I did by Vaux telling him what I have and that I would be pleased to see him on Thursday or Friday afternoon.

Tuesday May 27. We did some packing up today and at 3 o'clock with a carnage and went over to the foot of 33rd St E.R. where we took the boat at 4 for Mr. DeForests place on Long Island at Cold Springs Harbor. Mr. DeForest was on board. The day grew somewhat threatening and we arrived there in a sort of a fog. They have a charming country house and live delightfully. Wednesday was very bright and warm. We rode to Oyster Bay in the forenoon and took a short ride in the afternoon. Mr. DeForest was obliged to go to town. We returned Thursday morning having had a delightful visit. Lockwood his son is going to the Adirondacs on Monday for a month with his uncle Mr. Francis Meeks. When I reached my studio I found a very friendly note from Dr. Coch in which he said he had spent all the money he could afford this spring for Art, but thanked me for writing him and saying he would like to have one of my pictures. So ends that venture. It is very warm and we will be glad to get into the country. I found a letter from Sara in
