I saw come over Mosier's face the winter we were in Rome, and I have thought of it many times. Downing returned from the Adirondacs Thursday.

Monday Aug 25" 1873. My father and I took the 2.40 train and went to Shandaken Centre to see Whittredge. I found him much better so that he rather regretted having written so despondingly. It was very warm when we left here but the wind changed in the afternoon and at night I was kept awake by the cold my bed not having sufficient cover. We remained at Laments until Sunday when we returned by the 3.40 train. We had a walk up towards Deep Hollow. It was a breezy cool day more like October than August and Whittredge enjoyed it exceedingly and seemed much pleased that I had come out to see him. My father and I arrived here at 5.30. Wednesday 27". Downing and I took the boat after breakfast and sailed down to the Esopus light house with a fair wind on the ebb tide. After fishing there and having no luck the tide having turned we beat back with a good breeze going up the river as far as the upper ice house. Altogether we had a delightful day, not too hot and the sun obscured by clouds most of the time. The days are charming now, cool and delightful the country as green as June and it seems to me that one of the happiest summers of my life is coming to a close, in such marked contrast to last summer. Mary returned from her visit to Newport last night.

Thursday 28. I painted a picture today 12 x 20 of an effect I saw the day we came up the river and tried a second one on which I failed
