and painted on it with great pleasure. I hope still to improve it. The size is 12 x 20. Received a letter from Lucy today telling me she had received the little picture I painted for her to give to the Doctor and enclosing the price of the frame. She was delighted with the picture as was the Doctor. Gertrude received a letter from Mrs. Weir and one from Mrs. Church. Wrote to Goupil for more Flake White and a short note to Dunning who wants to come up and bring over Olmstead for Thanksgiving but my father not being at all well prefers that he should come alone. I read a biographical sketch of Dr Francis Lieber in the "Scribner" last evening. He was an admirable man. I used to see him at the Century Club but I never knew anything about him. He was a handsome attractive looking old gentleman and I should like to know more of him.

Tuesday Nov. 25" 1873. It snowed again today and cleared off colder towards night so that it seems we will have sleighing. Painted on my little winter picture and put in some more figures. Received a long and cheerful letter from Whittredge. He seems to think there will be as many pictures sold as usual.

Pa was not quite strong enough to go and my mother could not go so Gertrude, Julia Vaux and I started with the two horses at 10 and reached there at 12 1/2. The sleighing was as fine as I ever saw it. It snowed a little but towards night cleared off and the moon came out to light us home. We had a very pleasant day and all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Friday 28. I went to work this morning but was obliged to leave off about noon to treat myself for a headache which I cured before dark by the usual method of soaking my feet in hot water.

Saturday 29. Painted all day on my late Autumn. The weather continues steadily wintry. Took a walk towards Kingston in the evening. Received a letter from Sara today in which she tells me that Mrs. Stoddard met a gentleman at dinner at Stedmans who says he will give five hundred dollars for one of my pictures if he sees one he likes. That he has always wanted one and has tried to approach me personally and
