in his winter walks there and gave me a cordial invitation to come there and see him when he would take great pleasure in going about with me as he knew familiarly all the places which would charm an artist. I took an instinctive liking to him and I fancy I interested him. I was also introduced to Hon John Bigelow our former Minister to France who asked Whittredge to introduce him to me. I found him an easy man to talk with as he certainly is an interesting one. Mr. Collins introduced me to a young man named Holyoke who is desirous of visiting my studio. I had a very enjoyable evening such as one can find no where so well as at the Century. General Schenck our present Minister to [[strikethrough]] France [[/strikethrough]] England was there. I did not ask to be introduced to him as there was a throng about him and I dont want to be thrust at distinguished people unless I have an opportunity to talk with them.

I went up to Wilmurts this morning and exchanged a part of my $1000 check for some smaller ones to pay off some bills in the country and went down to Stewart's and paid for our carpet.

Sunday Mar. 8. We went to hear Mr. Frothingham preach this morning. His sermon was an excellent one in [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] material and spiritual interests. He preaches my ideas nearer than anyone else I hear, and is thoroughly practical and with a fervent belief in the Divinity of Humanity. After church I wrote some letters and sent off some checks as follows. To my father $100. My mother $25. Tappen & Co 83.81. and Miss Lamont $100. Mrs. Fassett $23. and Miss Nemore $23. It was bright and sunny when we went out but we have had snow squalls since.

Monday 9. Took a walk and while I was gone Mr. Williams of Boston called. Recd. check from Myers and Heclian for $350 for my picture of Winter 20 x 24 oval top. I paid my rent to Feb 1. Mrs Winter $100 and a couple of smaller bills. The weather is windy and wintry again. Wrote to Lily French sending her a piece of Burn's bed valance and Gertrude sent her a scrap of Brocade from Marie Antoinettes bed room furniture. Wrote a note to Sarony relative to sitting for photographs. Acknowledged Myers & Heclians letter.
