133 Saturday June 20th 1874. Spent the day in trying to ward off a headache which I did by sitting with my feet in hot water for more than three hours. Vaux, Julia, Marian and Lovey Stoddard came up by the Powell. I went to the village (Strand) in the morning to deposit my check from Mr. James and to buy some tools. Tuesday 23. Sara and Edith Cook came up last evening on the Powell. Calvert went down yesterday morning. I received a short letter from Edwin Booth inviting us to make them a visit in August. My father and I went to see about getting a brick-board made yesterday. I took a walk out towards the Roatina this morning and found it extremely hot. The hot weather wilts me as it did not use to. I painted Marian in my picture yesterday with her head lying in the lap of the seating figure. It improves the picture very much. I have it nearly done now and am anxious to finish it. Wrote to Eastman inviting him and his wife to come up for a week, to Mr Secor to borrow a frame and to Mr. Rutter for Mr. Booths address. Monday 24. Bowyer was to sail for England today in a sailing vessel. Received a letter from Hasen Putnam and a package of books. Sent him two specimen drawings and some enquiries about size and shape of drawings. Painted a little picture for Cuykendall from a brook sketch in Stony Close. Sunday 28. Mary came up last evening for the summer with Calvert & Julia. John Decker and his wife from Montgomery came on Monday and went home on friday. Vaux and I went over on the Vlightbergh this morning and found it very pleasant there. It was very hot, one of the hottest days of the summer. I was sick all day yesterday. Tried to work a little in the morning but was obliged to go to bed. Today I have written to Alfred Booth that if he wants my "Pine Tree" I will exchange with him for the little picture and $300. Wrote to Snedeen asking him to send me the $50 he owes me. Answered a note from Wilmont, wrote to the Batchelders, to Weir and to the Grays. Monday 29. Vaux and I went over on the Vlightbergh and made a sketch in the forenoon. It was very hot. Sara, Edith Cook and the children went out to Leggs Mills for a picnic. A tremendous wind and rain came up in the afternoon. I went after them about five o'clock and it rained nearly all the way there and back. We had a fine sunset shining through rain. Tuesday 30. I commenced a little picture of Marian fishing this forenoon. Recd. a letter from a Mr. Coale of St. Louis wanting me to paint him a picture, a letter from the Secretary of the Louisville Exposition urging me to send something also a letter
