Office Sub Asst. Comr BRF&AL
Columbia Texas June 22 1867
Lieut. J.T. Kirkman
AAA Gen &c
Sir
This will be handed to you by Private Stokes, the soldier summoned as witness in the case of the U.S. vs Roberts. I have not been able to send Mr Stokes to Galveston until now, but hope he will be in time to answer the purpose for which he has been summoned.
I have directed him to report to General Doubleday upon his arrival in Galveston, and have written to the General a statement of the case.
Owing to the uncertainty of travel on the Railroad and the fact that Private Stokes is without funds I have made arrangements for his transportation on the Steamboat "Camargo", being more direct and economical than by rail.
