It is a fact as well known to the Asst. Com. as to myself. that this McGary is a noted Rebel one who does not hesitate to denounce the action of the U.S. Government, and the Bureau, especially. He is known to be an evil disposed and malicious person, I know he furnished said Howard with money and instructed him fully in regard to the report he was to make to the Asst. Com. which was a base lie and only intended by McGary, to make trouble for me while he fleeced Howard. In accordance with your orders the Pistol has been returned, also two yoke of oxen & one Wagon.

I would also state that the said McGary has in his possession eighty dollars ($80.0) in Gold, belonging to Howard, in addition to the amount specified in his statement.

Your letter states that from the said Howards statement the Bureau seems to have taken but little part in his, and the other Freedpeoples troubles &c,
