Adjutant, I have the honour to report I am here in attendance on the District Court, brought here by a writ of Habeas Corpus.

All Motions, Exceptions and demurrers were argued today and every one of them overruled. On Friday, 27th Inst the case will be tried on its merits, and I think the writ will be sustained.

If so good by to the Bureau in this latitude. The whole bar has volunteered there services in support of the writ. Amongst them, William C Wiseman, who has lately applied for a position in the Bureau. I would respectfully refer you to your files as to his status both as a man and an officer. As Chief Justice of this County he has done more to my personal knowledge to defeat the object and usefulness of the Bureau than any man in the state. In the argument made by him to day, or rather the speech, his whole effort was to throw odium both on the Bureau and the workings of it. Should he be appointed I will surely resign.

I caused to be arrested one Dial, on two seperate affidavits, for false imprisonment and kidnapping, and threatning to kill, hence the writ which I am now disputing. Should Dial be discharged from my custody what shall I do, or how shall I proceed for the future. If I cannot arrest how can
