Seguin, Guadaloupe Co. Texas

Personally came and appeared before me, the undersigned authority, John Mays, a freedman, who being duly sworn, deposes and says: - That some time in the month of December 1865, one Patience Gillespie, aged about sixteen years of age, made application to Mr. C. Wiseman, chief justice of Guadaloupe County, to have her friend - John May appointed her guardian, that said chief justice in his John May's presence refused to do so- stating at the same time, and as a reason why he should not- that he did not consider Freedmen in any other light than as mules or oxen. I make the statement voluntary - and of my own free will.
Sworn to and subscribed John his X mark Mays before me this 2d day of June 1866
