Sir: I have the honor to report the arrival at this place of Luit James B. Moore; as my successor in office. His presenting himself to me was the first intimation I have had of it, and nothing reached me from you by this mornings mail. I must acknowledge I feel in a most singular position. We have had a long interview, the result of which is that I shall remain with him for a few days. I make the sacrifice to soften the way for my successor, and to close up partial & adjudicated cases. Of course he is master of the situation. And I write merely to ascertain the condition or circumstances under which I do leave. You will please answer by return mail. I leave nothing confused behind me. All is as transparent as my [[?]].

Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servant.
