Enclosed please find Copy of orders &c; appointing me in the year 1865. Provost Marshall and agent of Freedmans Bureau for the County of Smith in this State; I accepted the appointment and though opposition and prejudice at that time ran high, I did my duty; I would most respectfully ask of you the appointment, as Agent of the Freedmans Bureau for the Counties of Smith, Cherokie, Henderson, or any other County or Counties adjoining; If appointed, will perform my duties faithfully, and beg leave to ask in particular for Smith County where my family now resides, for qualification &c. I would most respectfully refer you to Capt Jno Q. St Clair, who was Collector of U.S. Arms Property &c; immediately after the surrender in the Eastern District Texas, and who now resides in your City; also Genl Josiah Sheets and Col Thos
