Palestine Texas April the 26th 1867.

Col. Wm H. Sinclair
Inspector Genl R.F. & A.L.
Galveston Tex.

Col.
Your communication dated April the 17th 1867. received; thank you kindly for your action in the premises: I have learned that Brevet Col Montgomery has four counties viz Smith, Vanzandt, Cherokee & Henderson - Four large counties, if possible & the District could be divided I would be pleased to have two of said counties, either Cherokee & Henderson, or Henderson & Van Zandt - or in case such can not be done & any other large districts could be divided it would afford me a great pleasure in performing the duties:

The course I pursued when acting before as Freedman's agent has had the effect to create a prejudice against me in the minds of a majority of the rebels, though all who wanted Justice done to the Freedmen endorsed all I did in the premises, and as a matter of course on account of such prejudice & injustice it is allmost impossible for me to support my family. And even now my life is in danger having been threatened over & over again in Smith County [[strikethrough]] & [[/strikethrough]] for or on account of this I left my home & came here to make a support for my family.

Enclosed you will find my petition for appointment
