Palestine Texas April the 8th 1867

Brevet Col. William H. Sinclair
Inspector of Bureau R.F. & a.L.

Sir.
Whilst absent from this place at Tyler, you passed through & consequently did not have the pleasure of seeing you. I have written to General Griffin under the impression that he had sole charge of Freedmans Bureau in this State, (but have learned since that I was mistaken) enclosing copies of orders &c appointing me in the year 1865 Provost Marshall & agent of Freedmans Bureau for the County of Smith in this State, copies of which you will find herewith enclosed: I accepted said appointment & though opposition & prejudice at that time ran high I did my duty, and would most respectfully ask at your hands the appointment as agent of Freedmans Bureau for any District or County in the State where no agent has been appointed, one as near Smith County as possible would be preferred, as my family resides in said County.

For qualifications &c &c I would most respectfully refer you to Captain John H. Morrison of this place & Wm. V. Tunstall Esqr U.S. Post Master of Palestine, or any reference from good loyal citizens who [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] reside in this district: also to Capt. Jno Q. St. Clair of Galveston Texas

Respectfully &c
Your obt. servant.
