I am useing every exertion to raise the spirits of the Freedmen. they are [as a general thing] disheartened. they seem to think [and not without good cause.] that their five months work is lost without any possible chance to regain it this year. I try to show & convince them that their only hope is in hanging on and working whenever opportunity offers. thereby saving a portion.
I go to Wallisville (Chambers Co.) this evening. intending to return tomorrow.
On Wednesday I go to West Liberty. from that point I shall start for Tarkingtons' Prairie.

Very Respectfully
