Sir I have the honor to report that I left this place on Tuesday June 4" with the intention of visiting "Grand Cane" (proper.) "Island settlement of Grand Cane." & Tarkington's Prairie. I reached Grand Cane on the evening of the 4", the next morning 5" I started Horseback [with a guide] for the river, the distance is in reality five miles, after proceeding one mile I came up with the back water from the overflow, all the creeks, slough's & Bayou's where overflowed, after swiming about for nearly a half day and not succeeding in getting any farther around the big swamp I concluded to return to Liberty & start
